On 28th October, 1916, the 5th London battalion of 169 Brigade, 56th Division moved into the front line at Richebourg L’Avoue, between La Bassée and Estaires, where they remained until relieved on 3rd November. On 1st November, the day on which Samuel Wheatcroft was killed, the battalion diary recorded that there was trench mortar activity by both sides but makes no mention of any casualties. |
